Saturday Special: Armed Forces Day with Kraft Outlet

armed4.gif - 3.9 K

Armed Forces Day was created on Aug. 31, 1949, when Louis Johnson, then Secretary of Defense, announced the creation of the special day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force days. The event stemmed from the armed forces unifying under one department, the U.S. Department of Defense.

The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on May 20, 1950. According to the Defense Department, the day was designed to expand the public’s understanding of the types of jobs performed and the role the military plays in civilian life.  Parades, open houses, receptions, air shows, cemetery remembrances and other events were held throughout the country on  that inaugural Armed Forces Day.

American soldiers serve all over the world and are fighting every day in Afghanistan. At last count, almost 1,500 U.S. soldiers have died in that war. So, if you see or talk to a veteran,  today or any day, please thank him or her for their service.
